One Day Around Bishop Auckland
Walking past the new Asda store in South Church Road one day, I began to realise how much the face of my hometown had changed over the years. Asda stands on the site of the former foundry, known locally as Wilson’s forge and whose menacing smoky brown facade I well remember as a child.
I began to consider how other buildings and landmarks might soon disappear and be replaced by something more contemporary for our ever changing community. That’s when I decided to spend just one day walking around the town, photographing its very fabric so that future generations might look back on the pictures and remember, too, how things have changed.
Similarly, for those ex-pats from ‘Bishop’, wherever they may now live, I have provided a collection of images showing how various aspects of how the town looked on one exhilarating autumn day……
…..that day, for no particular reason, was Friday 8 October 2004.
